ANTONIUM: WHEN A RESTAURANT BECOMES AN EXPERIENCE

Engineer Anton Kuzkin on the principles of good public interior design and how the EDEN project transforms them into a memorable environment

EDEN is a place that not simply looks impressive – it feels like a wholesome architectural experience. Interior design studio ANTONIUM is behind some of the most iconic bars and restaurants in Bulgaria. We spoke with Engineer Anton
Kuzkin about one of the studio's newest projects: the EDEN restaurant.

What is most important when creating a restaurant interior?

The most important element is the people. The interior should make guests feel calm, impressed, and cared for. This is achieved through a balance of aesthetics, comfort, and psychology. The space should work for the person – it should never feel cluttered, excessively minimalistic, or overwhelming.

Why do you refer to the "psychology" of interior design?

Because every decision affects guests' behaviour – the lighting, the softness of the sofas, the spacing between tables, the colours, the acoustics.

When the details are precise, guests stay longer, feel comfortable, and return. At ANTONIUM, we always start with one question: What should the person feel in the space?

Which principles define a successful public interior today?

I would summarise five:

First: the light – natural and architectural. The restaurant features a glass roof that lets in maximum daylight and creates the feeling of an open garden. Below it runs a system of cassetted wooden elements that distribute the light evenly and add rhythm, warmth and structure. This "light ceiling" is complemented by stylish decorative luminaires by MASIERO and high-end architectural lighting. The sun shading systems allow precise control of both natural and artificial light.

Second: comfort. The curved sofas, soft curtains, textile rugs and subtly patterned wallpapers in gentle tones create an enveloping sense of comfort. The materials have been chosen to be both gentle on the senses and visually calming.

Third: acoustics. This is often underestimated. Textiles, greenery, and surface textures shape a quiet, pleasant sound environment.

Fourth: nature. It is not decoration, but a structural element. At EDEN, the greenery is integrated into the architecture, rather than being "added" afterwards.

Fifth: identity. The restaurant must have character. At EDEN, this begins at the entrance, where guests are greeted by the iconic giraffe designed by the world-renowned Marcel Wanders.

How does EDEN reflect ANTONIUM's philosophy?

EDEN is an example of a space where architectural vision is felt in every detail. The glass roof with wooden elements creates a dynamic light pattern that changes throughout the day. The materials – travertine, wood with varied textures, textiles, brass meshes, soft wallpapers – create a rich yet unobtrusive environment. The bar, crafted from solid travertine, is one of the key focal points, giving weight and monumentality to the central space. Designer luminaires by MASIERO add poetry and vertical accents. Special attention was given to the air conditioning, which is completely invisible yet contributes significantly to comfort. Sliding glass showcases with integrated sunshades enhance energy efficiency, allowing control over light and heat through the seasons without compromising the elegance of the interior. When the background environment is calm, the focus naturally falls on the food and company. This is the role of good interior design – to support the experience, not to overshadow it.

What makes EDEN different?

The consistency of the sensations. Guests enter, greeted by the sculptural presence of Wanders' giraffe, move through greenery, pass beneath a wooden ceiling lattice, and step into a space that lives with the light. It is a carefully orchestrated, dynamic experience – not a static one.

What advice would you give to people who are just starting to create a restaurant?

Think from the guest's perspective, not the furniture's. A beautiful interior alone is not enough. The most successful spaces are those that people return to again and again.

EDEN is an example: functional, human-centred, and memorable, yet never overbearing.

What gives you the greatest satisfaction from this project?

Seeing the restaurant full of people who feel comfortable and come back. That is the most honest compliment for an interior.

Marcel Wanders.
