Aboubakr Hennou, General Manager, on creating genuine connection with guests
Managing the iconic InterContinental Sofia requires a blend of competence, experience, vision, dedication, and creativity. Since September, Mr. Aboubakr Hennou has consistently proven himself the ideal professional for the role. After gaining exceptional experience at the renowned InterContinental Marseille – Hotel Dieu, he now leads InterContinental Sofia with passion and innovative ideas, poised to further elevate the hotel's reputation for refined experiences and world-class dining. His dynamic approach promises a new era of excellence and innovation for InterContinental Sofia on the global hospitality stage.
What excites you the most about being the General Manager of InterContinental Sofia?
What excites me most is the opportunity to lead a team of passionate professionals in one of Sofia's most iconic hotels. InterContinental Sofia is a refined blend of modern elegance and local authenticity, and it's incredibly rewarding to shape meaningful guest experiences in such a setting.

I take particular pride in our food and beverage offering, which I truly believe is the best in the city. From a perfectly crafted cocktail to a memorable dinner at ADOR, seeing our guests enjoy those moments is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my role.
But above all, it's the people who make this job so special. Our team's genuine hospitality, their attention to detail, and their pride in what they do are what truly elevate the experience. I'm proud to work alongside individuals who don't just deliver service – they create connection.
I'm driven by the dynamic nature of the role – no two days are the same – and by the possibility to constantly innovate while upholding the brand's global standards of luxury. There's something truly special about seeing how every small detail contributes to the big picture of excellence.

And what is the biggest challenge for you in this position?
The biggest challenge is ensuring we stay ahead in a constantly evolving industry, while preserving the qualities that make us exceptional. Guests have high expectations when they choose InterContinental, and rightfully so. They expect the highest standards, not just in service and comfort, but also in dining, ambiance, and authenticity. Meeting those expectations day after day requires relentless focus and creativity. It's about maintaining the excellence of our F&B experiences, ensuring every interaction feels personal and warm, and adapting smartly to innovation – whether in sustainability practices or technology – without ever losing the human touch that defines luxury hospitality.

What makes InterContinental Sofia a unique experience, in your opinion?
InterContinental Sofia offers a truly unique combination of location, ambiance, and experience. Situated in the heart of the city with iconic views, a unique Presidential suite and state of the art meeting facilities we are a gateway to both business and culture. But what sets us apart is the soul of the hotel – our team's genuine warmth and our exceptional food and beverage offering. From breakfast to late-night cocktails, every detail is thoughtfully curated. ADOR has become a destination in itself, where locals and international guests meet over exquisite cuisine in a vibrant atmosphere. This blend of local charm, cosmopolitan flair, and impeccable service makes every stay truly memorable.

What are the core current trends in luxury hospitality that you are implementing in InterContinental Sofia?
Luxury hospitality is undergoing a transformation, moving away from formality and toward personalized experiences. Today's luxury traveler seeks meaningful, immersive experiences, and that is exactly what we focus on delivering. Gastronomy plays a central role – we've positioned our F&B offering as a key pillar of the guest journey, bringing together refined flavors, elegant design, and lively social energy. At the same time, we embrace innovation thoughtfully: digital enhancements such as seamless check-ins and smart room technologies improve convenience without overshadowing personal interaction. Sustainability remains a priority, with ongoing initiatives that align with global standards. But above all, the real trend we believe in is sincerity – hospitality that is heartfelt, attentive, and distinctly human.

This April, you hosted an exciting event – a Michelin-star chef cooking for the guests of ADOR restaurant. How did it go?
The event was an absolute success and a proud moment for us. Hosting Michelin-starred chef Lionel Levy at ADOR was not only a culinary celebration but also a statement of our ambition to elevate the gastronomic scene in Sofia. We were fully booked for both evenings, welcoming a wonderful mix of guests – including several ambassadors, with the French Ambassador among them, beautifully reflecting the theme of the event. The response was overwhelmingly positive; guests appreciated the artistry, the storytelling behind each dish, and the impeccable service that accompanied the experience. Events like this allow us to push boundaries and offer something truly exceptional. It was also a great opportunity for our culinary team to exchange ideas and inspiration with a renowned chef, further enriching our own standards of excellence.

Do you have other plans about the rest of 2025 that you would like to share with us?
Absolutely. 2025 is a year of ambition and refinement for us. We are curating a calendar of events that celebrate the best of local and international culture – whether through fine dining, art, or music. Our aim is to host at least one signature event each month, creating moments that engage both our guests and the local community.
A key highlight will be the introduction of exclusive culinary experiences, with plans to welcome internationally renowned chefs twice a year for unique collaborations. These events are designed not only to delight our guests, but also to inspire and develop our own culinary team through direct exchange with some of the best in the world.
We are continuing to invest in guest experience innovation, staff development, and sustainability, with initiatives that enrich the stay while reflecting our long-term commitment to responsible luxury. Our goal is to position InterContinental Sofia not only as a place to stay, but as a vibrant hub of cultural and social life in the city. There is much more to come – and we look forward to surprising our guests in the most delightful ways.
