The companies that are members of the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria are big, mid-size and small, and make 99% of beer in the country. Their share is 95% of the market and every year they pay taxes to the government that exceed 360 million leva. In 2023, despite the serious challenges due to the increased expenses for raw materials, the intensive investments in the brewing industry continued. The capital investments in the past 18 months amounted to 92 million leva, of these over 45 million leva were in long-term material assets for green innovation

LEADING AND PROMISING TRENDS

In Bulgaria about 200 brands and assortments of beer are made, the imported labels are at least the same number.

In the past years there has been a visible trend for development of premium beers. The interest in different beer styles, such as IPA, stout, bock, wheat, radler, and beers with stronger hop aroma and taste remains prominent.

The most popular beer in Bulgaria is the lager, Pils type, with a market share of 95-96%. The greatest part of the beer of this type consumed in Bulgaria (97%) is produced locally. In the country over 12 licensed global beer brands are also made.

The portfolio of alcohol-free and low-alcohol beers is also developing, especially among consumers aged 19-30. The product innovations for expanding this category are bound to continue.

The capital investments in innovation and green solutions will also grow. The ESG responsibilities of the companies will be fulfilled and the industry will continue its positive development. More and more consumers in Bulgaria opt for beer that they are aware was made by a socially and environmentally responsible company.

The ESCG investments made by the Bulgarian beer producers in development of human resources, projects that contribute for the communities, environmental initiatives and sustainability, and programmes for responsible consumption total over 5.5 million leva. The human capital is the greatest and strongest asset of the brewing industry. The arrangements with the trade unions set in the collective labour contract are proof that the care for their workers and employees is a priority for every employer that is a member in the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria.

UBB - LEADER IN INTRODUCTION OF DEPOSIT SYSTEM IN BULGARIA

In the past years the focus of green campaigns organised by the Bulgarian brewers has been on waste sorting and package reusing and the industry’s engagements for the upcoming introduction in Bulgaria of a deposit system. With the implementation of a deposit system all producers and importers of beverages will be obliged to provide buyback of plastic bottles, cans and glass bottles.

This large-scale and complicated project requires special law and millions of investments that will exceed 90 million leva.

For the implementation of a deposit system in the country UBB partners with the Bulgarian Soft Drinks Association, the Bulgarian Industrial Association and, of course, the Environment Ministry. UBB actively exchanges experience with colleagues abroad. It is important to start timely educational and informational campaigns that improve the awareness of what the deposit system is and its benefits are. The union believes that this will help the companies to comply with the requirement that in 2029 90% of the beverage packages released on the market should be sorted.

MEMBERS OF THE UNION OF BREWERS IN BULGARIA

Members of the UBB are the following companies: Boliarka VT, Britos, Zagorka, Kamenitza, Carlsberg Bulgaria, Lomsko Pivo, and Dorovski Invest, along with the only two companies in the country that make malt - Malterie Soufflet Bulgaria and Bulmalts, and the only local hops manufacturer, Bulhops.

STRONG BULGARIAN PARTICIPATION AT THE FORUM OF EUROPEAN BREWERS IN LILLE

From use of AI for analysis and improvement of manufacturing processes to selection of better varieties of hops and barley: over 140 innovative solutions for sustainable development of the branch were presented at the Forum of Brewers in Europe and the congress of the European Brewing Convention in Lille earlier this year.

For the first time, the organisers invited as key business lecturer a representative of the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria. Gabriela Popova, owner and manager of Britos, Veliko Tarnovo, presented the challenges and opportunities for growth and success of small innovative breweries. Mrs Popova is also the first and only woman in the 11 countries of Central and Eastern Europe who is the owner and CEO of a small independent brewery.

AT THE HELM OF THE UNION OF BREWERS IN BULGARIA

Ivana Radomirova has been the CEO and member of the managerial board of the UBB since 2014. She has led the CSR and ESG campaigns of the union, which have won 18 national awards from competitions for social responsibility.
