Architect Militsa Petrova and architect Asen Ignatov founded Spacemode Studio to design spaces that achieve functionality, balance and a harmonious relationship between buildings and the environment. Architect Petrova is also passionate about the preservation of architectural heritage. Her doctoral thesis is dedicated to modernist architecture on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, focusing on its conservation, the study of spatial memory and the potential for sustainable development of urban models.

What made you interested in the resorts built under Socialism on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast?

The resorts in Bulgaria are unique, artificially created urban structures. They are an architectural phenomenon in the Bulgarian context, fulfilling the requirements of the Communist regime and at the same time following contemporary modernist architectural trends. They can be compared to resorts on the French Riviera, such as La Grande-Motte. Architect Nikolay Nenov, the designer of the Albena resort, introduced innovations in modular construction of global significance. Analogies can also be found in the urban planning principles and scale guidelines used at Sunny Beach, which are in line with modern criteria for sustainable and ecological urban development and the New European Bauhaus.

What development potential do these complexes have today?

The future sustainable development of the old resorts depends largely on the creation of a comprehensive planning concept and a multidisciplinary development strategy. It is necessary to look at the urbanised area in a new way and to recognise its importance for the public. The architecture of the modernist movement deserves to be preserved as an immovable cultural asset. These spatial characteristics have the potential to become a powerful resource for the development of cultural tourism.

What attracted you to the idea of the New European Bauhaus? How do you see these principles being applied in Bulgaria today?

In our buildings and complexes, developed in cooperation with Atlantis Bulgaria, we aim to create a favourable environment and atmosphere that fosters a sense of community among residents and their families. Our mission is to create spaces for people that are in harmony with the environment.

Eco-urbanism is a new paradigm in urban design that promotes the development of sustainable communities within a harmonious and balanced built environment. The biophilia hypothesis suggests that people need contact with biodiversity to develop their emotional, cognitive and social potential. That is why I believe that projects should be an extension of our natural environment.

We need to combine our political, social and technological resources to design healthy built areas that are in balance with nature. These trends are part of the ideas behind the New European Bauhaus and aim to create more sustainable, inclusive spaces and engage their inhabitants in the green transition at a local level.

Spacemode Studio
