ROSITSA PETROVA: SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF WOOL

Home of Wool is our chance to minimize the influence of chemicals on our health

We are becoming increasingly aware of the harmful impact that a chemical-laden environment has on our lives and health. But what next, if we want to reset? Rositsa Petrova not only pondered on these questions – she has found an answer. Her company, Home of Wool, specializes in hand-made, bespoke mattresses, bedding and décor that ensure a natural, calming and healthy environment for when we are most vulnerable – when we are asleep, when our children are still babies in need of the utmost care. Home of Wool products are a symphony of solutions for our sleep and daily lives – delicate, beautiful and nurturing a healthy lifestyle.

Why is wool the best solution for a healthy and comfortable sleep environment?

Wool is a nature-made fiber with unique qualities that no man-made fiber can match. A study, conducted by The University of Sydney, researched the effects of sleepwear fibre type and bedding on sleep and proved that wool helps us regulate our body temperature. Therefore, we not only fall asleep quicker, but we also have deeper, less fragmented sleep. Wool keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. It's hypoallergenic, non-static, repels dust mites, mold, and bacteria. It's perfect for allergy sufferers and newborns.

Where do you source your materials, and how are your products made?

We source our wool from a trusted Bulgarian mill. It's natural, undyed, unbleached, and chemicals free. Our wool fabric is also from Bulgaria, while our linen fabrics come from Lithuania, a country renowned for its fine linen.

All our products are handcrafted in our Sofia atelier by our skilled artisans, following our customers' exact measurements and designs. Depending on workload, we typically complete orders within two-three weeks.

What's your favorite Home of Wool product?

That's a tough one, but I'd say our wool mattresses. They bring together all of wool's benefits and can truly transform sleep quality. I also love our bedroom essentials: duvets, pillows, and mattress toppers.

Can you take us back to the moment when you realized your mission to create a healthier home environment for your child and family could grow into something bigger?

It started after five years of trying to find a remedy for my son's recurring allergic reactions and respiratory illnesses. I witnessed the effect of living in a chemical-free home on his health. Many parents are trying to create a safe, natural home in which their kids can thrive. That's when I knew I had to share what I had discovered. So, with a lot to share and a bit of courage, what began as a personal mission soon grew into Home of Wool.

Many people dream of starting a purpose-driven business. What advice would you give to those looking to turn their passion into a company?

Focus on your mission, not the outcome and the profit. If you give your best, if you are ready to endure what you never thought you could before, if you accept the challenge to find what you are really capable of, success will follow. Surround yourself with people who share your values. Good things take time.

Home of Wool is a company where most of the workforce consists of women. How does that shape the company culture and the quality of your products?

While we have some amazing men in the atelier, we are mostly powered by women, which brings care, precision, and patience to everything we create. Many are mothers and grandmothers, which naturally influences our designs, especially for pregnancy, nursery, and kids' collections.

Culturally, we've grown into a mindful, slow business that values craftsmanship over rapid expansion. We don't believe in rushing production or pushing for aggressive growth. Instead, we focus on quality and balance. Work-life balance as well, realizing that everybody has a personal life and loved one to take care of at home as well.

Sustainability is a big part of your brand. Studies suggest that women play a key role in the movement toward conscious consumerism. Why do you think that is, and how does it influence your design process?

Mothers and caregivers make everyday decisions for their families – what to eat, where to sleep, what clothes to wear… More women recognize that these choices impact not just their children, but also their grandchildren, and the planet itself.

I know this firsthand. I was in that same position as a new mother, trying to make the best choices for my family. Women are leading the shift toward sustainability, choosing durable, multifunctional products that minimize waste. This responsibility drives us to create better more sustainable solutions, so we don't let them down.
