Rumyana Ilkova, founder of Rinterio

With a fine sense of detail and a clear feeling for balance, Engineer Rumyana Ilkova designs functional interiors that combine classical aesthetics with modern trends and each client’s individual touch. In her work, she believes that design is not just a profession but a mission – one she follows both through her projects and through her dedication to preparing the next generation of interior designers in Bulgaria. We spoke with her to learn more.

How did you realise that interior design was your passion?

I never really had to think about it – it happened very naturally, almost organically. It just did. I love my work and put all my energy into it. When I finish a project, I feel like a child – I look at everything from the side and say to myself: "Done! Here is my next baby."

What is the first thing you do when you start a new project?

Oh! The very first and most important thing is to meet the people I will be working with. Because it is not just my work – and they realise that later on. We have quite a long introductory meeting. I need to know almost everything about them – their lifestyle, desires, ideas, dreams… and budget, of course. After that comes the real work: creating the conceptual design, more meetings with the client, and so on, until we reach the finish line – when they sign off and approve the final working drawings. It is quite a long process, and it is different for every client.

How do you manage to give each interior its own individuality?

Individuality comes from the client, not from me. Every interior should be created for the client, not for me. It is extremely important for me to love what I design – I never compromise on that. Still, as interior designers, we create spaces for the people who will live in them, and we must respect their wishes and ideas while also guiding and advising them. If I see that a client is heading in the wrong direction, I immediately steer them back – we meet, I explain things… until they themselves come to agree. Many people do not understand design, and that's perfectly fine – that's what interior designers are for.

What has been the most challenging interior you have worked on?

Every new project is a challenge for me. Each has its own specifics and tells a new story. I love going through the process of creating a new home for every client. The process itself is the thrill – the motivation to see it completed. That’s what drives me in my work.

Why did you decide to offer professional practice to high school students from the Elisaveta Vazova Vocational School of Design? What is the most important thing you want to teach them?

You might be surprised, but I didn’t actually decide to – it just happened naturally again. Our son studies at the Elisaveta Vazova Vocational School of Design, specialising in Interior Design. He chose the profession himself, and my husband and I were happy to support him, of course. When we enrolled him, we met the school management, and they asked if we could take on a few students when the time came for their practical training. And that’s how it began. It’s a real pleasure for me – we have been hosting this practice at Rinterio for two years now. I think the students enjoy it. I try to show them both the beautiful and the not-so-pleasant sides of the job. We spend time together in a relaxed atmosphere, working, discussing and learning new things – it’s a lot of fun. They often tell me they learn more in a real work environment than at school, which is completely natural. When they leave after about ten days and their practice ends, I feel recharged – but at the same time, I miss them.

Do you have a favourite interior trend – and if so, which one?

The main goal of my profession is to create comfort, warmth and tranquillity for my clients, regardless of trends. I love designing more classic interiors with a modern touch, as they are timeless and enduring. I’m also very fond of eclecticism – in its positive expressions, of course. Sometimes I mix two styles – it is a challenge to make them "work" together in the name of aesthetics.
