Distinctive architecture. An iconic location that is instantly recognisable. A reputation for excellence and exclusivity. A list of distinguished guests: InterContinental Sofia is a true emblem of the city. Its current General Manager, Aboubakr Hennou, however, is working to make the hotel an even better version of itself.

Amid a strong technological shift in the industry and a profound transformation in traveller behaviour, he is focused on combining time-honoured traditions of hospitality with modern developments, positioning InterContinental Sofia as the true heart of the city – a place where guests are delighted to stay and locals come to enjoy excellent food and drinks. A true legend. Mr Hennou elaborates.

This is your second year as the general manager of InterContinental Sofia. What have you learnt about the hospitality sector in Bulgaria in this period?

In these two years, I have learnt that Bulgaria has all the qualities of a strong hospitality destination: authenticity, talent, character and a genuine sense of welcome. Sofia in particular benefits from a very interesting mix of diplomatic, corporate and leisure demand, which makes the market both dynamic and demanding. Guests today expect flawless international standards, but they are equally looking for warmth, personality and a true connection with the destination. I have also seen how competitive and fast-moving the sector has become, which means hotels must be commercially agile while remaining absolutely focused on the guest experience.

At the same time, a market like Bulgaria also needs visibility and recognition on the international scene. That recognition helps build confidence, attract attention and highlight the real quality that already exists here. For us, having InterContinental Sofia recognised with a Michelin Key was a very important moment. It is, of course, a recognition of the hotel itself, but it also helps place Sofia and Bulgaria more firmly on the map for international travellers. We are also very encouraged to see the Michelin Guide beginning to turn its attention to the restaurant scene here, with a first restaurant selection expected in 2027. Bulgaria has a great deal to offer in hospitality and gastronomy, and it fully deserves that growing international recognition.

What do you like about living and working in Bulgaria and Sofia in particular?

What I appreciate most is the balance Sofia offers. It is a capital city with culture, history, business energy and a very human scale. You can feel the rhythm of a modern European city, while still being close to nature, with Vitosha mountain always present in the background. Professionally, I enjoy the fact that Bulgaria is a place where relationships matter. There is a real sense of community, and I have found people to be warm, resilient and proud of their country. That makes both living and working here very rewarding.

You already made a mark on the local scene with your exceptional idea to invite a Michelin-awarded chef for a special event at the hotel. What are your newest plans for events at InterContinental?

We want InterContinental Sofia to remain a place where hospitality, gastronomy and lifestyle meet. After the success of our previous collaborations, we will continue to create distinctive culinary and social moments that resonate both with hotel guests and with the local community. We are particularly focused on strengthening the identity of ADOR restaurant, including the ADOR terrace as one of the city's refined dining destinations, while Floret Lounge Bar continues to evolve as a vibrant social address in Sofia. Our ambition is to offer events that feel elegant, lively and memorable, whether through special dinners, seasonal activations or collaborations that bring something fresh to the city.

How do you envision developing the hotel until the end of the year?

Our focus is clear: to keep elevating quality, strengthen our positioning in the luxury segment, and continue building on the hotel's strong reputation. This means enhancing the guest journey in every detail, from arrival to departure, while also sharpening our food and beverage identity and making our outlets even more attractive to locals. We want to grow in a way that is sustainable and consistent with the InterContinental brand, with excellence in service, a strong team culture and a product that continues to evolve with the expectations of today's traveller.

High technology is taking over the hospitality business. How, in your opinion, could technology and humans work best in the hospitality field?

Technology should make hospitality smoother, not colder. Its role is to remove friction, support efficiency and help us understand our guests better. But luxury hospitality remains, above all, a human business. A guest may appreciate fast systems and seamless processes, but what they remember is the welcome, the attention, the feeling of being recognised and genuinely cared for. The right balance is when technology supports our teams so they can spend less time on mechanics and more time on meaningful interaction.

Why do guests choose InterContinental Sofia?

Guests choose InterContinental Sofia because of a combination that is difficult to replicate: an exceptional location in the heart of the city, iconic views, an elegant product, and a team that delivers service with sincerity and pride. We are a hotel that welcomes celebrities, diplomats, business travellers, international visitors and local guests with the same commitment to excellence. People come to us for the reliability of a global luxury brand, but they return because of the experience they have with our people, and because places like Floret Lounge Bar and ADOR give the hotel a true life of its own.
