Attorney Petya Noycheva, founder of Petya Noycheva & Partners Law Office, on the key role of legal support in international business negotiations
Successful deals on new markets can’t go without quality legal services. A good lawyer can save you a bunch of inconveniences, whether you do business in Italy or in China. With more than 20 years of experience in international trade negotiations, Petya Noycheva travels the world with the mission to prevent problems from happening before they even arise.
What motivates a lady to start a law office specialised in corporate legal issues?
I started a law office after I had become experienced enough and was sure I wouldn’t mislead the clients who trusted me. I believe that trust is the core of everything. Passion for independence was the thing that motivated me. But it comes at a price. Sometimes I write contracts on weekends, clients keep calling at any time, no matter if I am in Japan, South America, or the USA. It’s not a burden because I love my job. I like business and its various cases, that’s why I chose commercial law. A great part of my job is to make the contracts in such a way that they don’t need to go to court at all. Our role is to provide support for our clients’ ventures.
How do you make things easier for your clients and how do you build trust?
Our first responsibility in any transaction or business enterprise is to make clients aware of the possible risks so they can make an informed decision. A good lawyer doesn’t obstruct business but rather helps in foreseeing the risks and cutting them to a minimum.
We make it easier for our clients as we put them in a strong position in the negotiations due to the fact they have been well informed on all the risks. Honest behaviour helps us build trust. If clients come to us with a case that we know they will lose, we tell them. They may still decide to run the case and make the expenses, the decision is theirs, but we never spare the truth.
You have broad experience in international business negotiations. How do cultural differences affect the process? What are the challenges?
Japanese and Chinese are not the only ones who are different from us. People from the Middle East, and even Germans and Italians, are not identical in their approach and communication. You can’t expect your foreign partners to act and react just like you during the negotiations. It’s good to know what things mean in different cultures and nationalities so that you can correctly interpret behaviour, body language and even words that are used. The biggest challenges are often clients themselves – if they don’t have an international experience they judge everything by referring to their work with Bulgarian partners. Over time I’ve learned how to prepare my clients for the expected behaviour of partners from different nationalities. This makes them confident in my actions.
