DECIBEL is not only Bulgaria's largest manufacturer of soundproofing solutions. It is a company with a mission: to help people escape noise pollution at home, at work, at school and in public spaces. Diana Nedkova, co-founder, talks about the principles of a healthy acoustic environment and the decision to create optimal acoustic conditions at Stremezh School in partnership with the Yordan Kamdzhalov Foundation.

What do ordinary people not know about the role of the acoustic environment at home and in public spaces?

Unfortunately, most people know very little about acoustics and only start paying attention when a problem arises. At home, this is usually noisy neighbours, building installations or other sources that interfere with sleep, rest and everyday life. That is when we realise the direct link between noise and our quality of life.

The same applies to public spaces such as hotels, sports halls and industrial premises. In a sports hall, for example, an acoustic problem becomes obvious when the audience cannot understand announcements over the PA system. In a hotel, it may be the air conditioning or ventilation system keeping us awake. We usually notice the acoustic environment only when it starts to disturb or tire us, or makes a space difficult to use.

How does DECIBEL help create a high-quality, healthy acoustic environment in these spaces?

At DECIBEL, we create healthy acoustic environments in homes, offices and sports halls, as well as industrial spaces, where noise can directly affect people's health and ability to work, including by increased sickness absence.

Different types of spaces have specific requirements. In living and sleeping areas, noise levels need to be low enough for normal sleep and rest. In conference rooms, classrooms and other specialised spaces, reverberation time, or how long sound lingers in a room, needs to be controlled so that speech remains clear without the speaker becoming tired or having to constantly raise their voice.

In industrial premises, heavy machinery often generates very high noise levels, and several machines can compound the problem. We address this through local soundproofing measures or by building soundproof operator cabins where employees are protected from excessive noise.

Our work covers the entire process: we engineer and calculate the solution, manufacture it, install it and finally measure the results. This allows us to verify that the required parameters have been met.

What are the key principles for achieving the best possible result?

The most important thing is to know from the outset how a space will be used. In a bedroom, soundproofing should be considered at the design stage or, at the latest, during renovation. It is much more difficult once everything has been completed and furnished and people have moved in.

The same applies to offices, schools and specialised buildings, particularly sports and music venues. In multifunctional halls, the acoustics must be designed around the different functions of the space. If a hall is going to host musical events, this needs to be known from the outset so that appropriate measures can be incorporated.

In schools and kindergartens, architects need to know in advance that the rooms will accommodate many children and that teachers' speech must remain clear. This means allowing for acoustic ceilings, wall panels and other solutions. Their shape, colour and positioning are also matters of design, but the need for them must be considered at the planning stage.

When these elements are missing, children and teachers suffer, as they are forced to constantly raise their voices. This is why timely action and working with experienced acoustic engineers are essential. Mistakes are expensive, labour-intensive and difficult to rectify.

With industrial projects, solutions can often be developed at a later stage because once the machinery has been installed, the problem can be measured precisely. A customised intervention can then be designed according to the specific source and propagation of the noise. Here too, experience and a portfolio of completed projects are particularly important.

What inspired you to start a joint initiative with the Yordan Kamdzhalov Foundation and Stremezh School to improve the acoustic environment in educational spaces?

The initiative grew out of our shared interest in sound and the way it affects listeners, users and, above all, children. Stremezh School is different: it teaches important, practical and relevant knowledge, which naturally motivated us to support it.

There are still very few schools in Bulgaria that have been designed with a good acoustic environment in mind. That is why, together with the Yordan Kamdzhalov Foundation, we decided to develop the best possible acoustic solution for existing buildings and classrooms that were not originally designed with acoustics in mind.

Our ambition is to create a model for a healthy acoustic environment in schools that can be used by other schools in Bulgaria. We want to demonstrate what a good learning environment should sound like. For us, acoustics are not merely a functional matter. They affect how children experience a space, listen, communicate and learn.

What are your goals?

With the Yordan Kamdzhalov Foundation we want to implement the model at Stremezh School, measure the results, identify what can be improved and develop a workable approach that can be applied in other educational spaces.

We want a model with measurable criteria: how children feel, how well they learn and how teachers feel. After this testing phase, we would like to offer the model to other schools and kindergartens.

At company level, we plan to continue automating our manufacturing facility, expand our production, which is already under way, and establish our products on the international market, including through product awards.

How do you plan to achieve them?

The answer is very simple: through hard work and consistency.
