There is an effective solution for taking care of the environment – and the economy

Environmental pollution has a dramatic effect on societies, but governments are still with eyes wide shut about innovative solutions to the problem. Metodi Mitev, a visionaire and a lobbyist with experience in waste management is on the mission to change this. With the Zero Waste project and the Center for Green Growth Association he is popularising an effective alternative solution – smart processing of RDF waste, biomass and sludge for production of carbon neutral hydrogen that is then used for electricity.

Why is your suggested approach for production of carbon neutral hydrogen the true solution of the energy and environmental crisis that society faces?

The use of RDF waste, biomass and sludge for the production of renewable hydrogen solves problems that are increasingly felt. By 2035 we will have to achieve 10% waste landfilling, a goal whose achievement requires strict measures. But with each passing year the waste we generate increases. I guess you are aware what happens with soil and groundwater when we landfill waste. We all remember the ecological crisis unleashed when sludge near Plovdiv spontaneously combusted, in 2011. On the other hand, the processes of waste separation and utilization are very energy-intensive, and with the introduction of renewable energy the price of electricity becomes unpredictable. With our solution for waste, biomass or sludge utilization, we produce hydrogen that we can use in a fuel cell to generate electricity. This process is completely carbon neutral and solves the problem with energy.

What steps do you take to introduce this method to a wide range of industries and enterprises?

We offer a hydrogen production plant that can utilize both solid household waste and biomass, sludge, etc. An elegant solution to a dual global challenge: a viable alternative to landfills and incinerators and a predictable, continuous clean energy source to replace fossil fuels.

The solution that we offer is a small decentralized facility processing chemical organic waste with minimal atmospheric emissions and producing a constant flow of hydrogen and isolated CO2. The energy required for the process is generated internally. The process is self-sustaining and carbon negative. Thus, there is less landfill waste and clean hydrogen is produced – pollution-free, carbon-free and landfill-free.

What are the main challenges you face in your mission?

The main challenges are the neglect and misunderstanding of waste problems at a local and national level. Our task is to introduce the society and the government to an extremely valuable technological installation and to implement it in Bulgaria. Thus, we will not only solve extremely difficult problems, but we will also be useful to ourselves, nature, and the earth.
