WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?
Situated a few miles from the Turkish border, this small town, which is named after a large town in northern Bulgaria, was in a no-go border zone for about 50 years.
The collapse of Communism brought on the abolition of the "zone," and visitors are now welcome. However, it also spawned the near-total breakdown of local industry, causing huge unemployment and mass migration to either the big cities or abroad. Not unique in the least as many other places like that have experienced a similar fate. Welcome to Small-Town Bulgaria where time has ground to a standstill, the locals are still welcoming and your journey will likely be through both space and history.
