THE PEOPLE VERSUS...
In English it sounds something like the Steal-a-Little-and-They-Throw-You-in-Jail-Steal-a-Lot-and-They-Make-You-King chorus line, but it is in fact an old Bulgarian adage that Bulgarians keep intoning whenever a bank goes bust or a dubious character emerges as a member of the new-rich elite.
A story circulated in the newspapers in June tends to corroborate this kind of folk wisdom.
As part of a settlement, the local court in Momchilgrad sentenced a man to three months in jail for purloining... kebapcheta, kyufteta and ayran valued at a total of 11.44 leva (5.80 euros). The crime the man committed was to steal moveable property consisting of 11 pieces of unroasted kebapcheta valued at 2.64 leva; 4 pieces of already roasted kebapcheta valued at 1.28 leva; 13 pieces of kyufteta valued at 4.55 leva; 3 plastic bottles of Rhodope ayran valued at 2.04 leva; and a 30-gram bottle of seasoned salt valued at 0.93 leva.
The accused faced up to 10 years in prison because he had already committed other crimes and had spent time behind bars. The settlement included a 30-leva court expenses bill.
