A leader who moves fluidly between technology, creative industries and international business, she has now added diplomatic protocol to the mix
As technology, creative industries and international business become increasingly interconnected, success depends not only on ideas and expertise, but also on understanding people, cultures and the environments in which relationships are built.
This July, Amsterdam brought together diplomats, executives, entrepreneurs and government professionals for an intensive International Business and Diplomatic Protocol Executive Certification programme. Among the participants was Katya Machuganova, whose professional journey spans journalism, communication, technology, intellectual property, digital media, gaming and creative industries.
For her, diplomacy is a natural extension of this journey – an opportunity to explore how communication, trust and cultural understanding shape international business.
You work across technology, creative industries, international business and communication. What made diplomacy and diplomatic protocol the next area you wanted to explore?
Diplomacy was not a new direction, but a natural extension of my professional journey. I have learned that a strong product or idea is only part of creating opportunities. Understanding people, cultures, institutions and context is equally important.
That is what attracted me to diplomatic protocol. It is not simply about etiquette, but about understanding context, communicating with respect, building credibility and creating trust.
The programme brought together professionals from very different backgrounds. What did you learn about building trust across cultures?
Trust is universal, even though the way we express it differs across cultures.
People have different expectations around hierarchy, communication, time and negotiation. What feels direct in one culture may feel aggressive in another; what feels appropriately formal to one person may feel distant to another.
International relationships therefore require curiosity. We need to listen before interpreting, observe before reacting and understand the cultural context before deciding how to approach someone.
For me, the key is adaptability without losing authenticity.

You have a background in journalism and work with intellectual property, digital media and technology. How do communication, diplomacy and ethics intersect in these fields?
I see them as increasingly inseparable.
Journalism taught me the power and responsibility of information. Intellectual property taught me the importance of ownership and protecting creativity. Technology has shown me how quickly ideas and industries cross borders.
Today, AI, digital media, gaming and creative technologies raise questions that are not only technological, but also legal, ethical, cultural and diplomatic.
Who owns an idea? Who benefits from innovation? How do we protect creators while encouraging progress?
These are questions where business, law, technology and diplomacy increasingly need to sit at the same table.
What role can diplomacy play as technology and creative industries become increasingly global?
Diplomacy can build bridges between markets, cultures and regulatory environments. A strong product is not enough when entering a new market; businesses also need to understand local expectations, legal frameworks and cultural sensitivities.
For creative industries, this is particularly important. Creativity travels globally, but it never travels into a cultural vacuum.
I believe commercial success and ethical responsibility should not be opposites. Sustainable value is built on trust, transparency and respect.
Ultimately, the strongest international businesses will not simply be those that know how to enter markets, but those that know how to earn trust within them.
