This is Bulgaria's first and largest university. It was founded in 1888 through the sponsorship of two Karlovo entrepreneurs, brothers Hristo and Evlogi Georgievi. Its main building was designed by French architect Henri Breanson as early as 1906, but construction never started due to the advent of the First World War.
