WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?
Arguably one of Bulgaria's prettiest cities, this town of 90,000 people lies perched on several hills at the northern slopes of the Stara Planina mountain range
It has had a tumultuous history. In the Middle Ages it used to be the capital of the Bulgarian kingdom. Its significance waned under the Ottomans. When Bulgaria regained its independence, in 1878, it was slated to become the capital again, but lost to Sofia by a single vote in the then young National Assembly. Still, it was the place where, symbolically, the first Bulgarian Constitution was adopted. Under Communism, it was remarkably vibrant not least because of its large population of students attending the local university. It has now become a major tourist hub with both day trippers and visitors interested in archaeology, art and culture, and of course in its notorious bars and restaurants. And, of course, its top attraction is the restored fortress, pictured here, which used to be the abode of Bulgaria's medieval kings.
