From high-tech surgery to strategic investments – the largest hospital in Bulgaria is a leader in both medicine and infrastructure
The University Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment "Saint George" – Plovdiv is the largest medical facility in the country, with nearly 3,000 employees and a capacity of 1,500 beds. The hospital serves over 150,000 patients annually, providing round-the-clock emergency and urgent medical care. It is also a pioneer in many healthcare initiatives and projects, including those on a national scale.
"Modernisation of hospital infrastructure, introduction of innovative technologies, and development of medical activities are at the core of our mission. We invest not only in equipment but also in the future of healthcare in Bulgaria," states the Executive Director of the University Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment "Saint George" in Plovdiv, Bulgaria since 2010, Prof. Karen Dzhambazov, DM.

As part of its strategic development, Hospital "Saint George" established a high-tech integrated centre for the treatment of diseases and trauma in the head and neck area. It features an automated operating theatre, a telecommunication endoscopic system, a mobile X-ray unit (C-arm), neuronavigation and ENT navigation systems, endoscopic equipment, and a neuromonitoring system.
In 2024, Hospital "Saint George" became the first in the region to implement the innovative, high-tech, robot-assisted surgical system VERSIUS. The system is integrated into a specially constructed operating theatre and is successfully used for high-precision, minimally invasive abdominal and urological surgery. Benefits for patients include reduced pain and shorter hospital stays, minimal risk of infection, and smaller incisions and scars.

In June 2024, Hospital "Saint George" opened the only high-tech cerebrovascular centre in Southern Bulgaria, capable of intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular treatment for patients with acute ischaemic strokes. This enabled the hospital to meet European and global standards in stroke care and to receive the highest international recognition – the Diamond Status from the Angels Initiative.
Another significant investment is the implementation of the CyberKnife system – the first robotic stereotactic radiosurgery system in Bulgaria for non-invasive tumour treatment, which has successfully treated over 1,000 patients over the past eight years.

Hospital "Saint George" is also carrying out large-scale investment projects for the construction of new buildings and the modernisation of existing ones. These include the development of a new eight-storey diagnostic and oncohaematology building for children, a new helipad with direct access to the emergency department, and a four-storey car park with over 600 spaces. These projects ensure the hospital provides the best possible conditions for both patients and staff.
Investments in innovation, infrastructure, and human capital are transforming the hospital into a model of a modern, responsible, and thriving medical institution – not only on a regional and national level but also across Europe.
