Tasia Tassova, a Bulgarian businesswoman and public figure, is the patron of a symbolic painting
She offered "The Embrace of Peace" in person to His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, on 25 June 2025. On the previous day, 24 June, an exhibition of the same title opened at the Basilica of Saint Clement in Rome – home to the relics of St Constantine Cyril the Philosopher – highlighting the Bulgarian impact on European cultural and Christian heritage.
Despite theological differences such as the filioque and the papal infallibility, both Catholics and East Orthodox Christians share the Christian hope for eternal life.
Tasia Tassova
Mrs Tassova, what is it like to meet with the Pope in the Vatican?
For sure it is a memorable event engraved in my heart forever. It was a peaceful and a thought-provoking meeting for me: I, as an ordinary Eastern Orthodox Christian from Bulgaria, and His Holiness Pope Leo XIV – viewed as a bridge-builder as he reaches across divides and, in my opinion, will lead with integrity.

The Embrace of Peace
You met with the Pope at the baciamano ceremony, what was the reason?
The reason is the artwork titled "The Embrace of Peace" of which I am kindly the patron. It is painted by the vibrant Milena Velcheva. The painting was officially gifted to Pope Leo XIV, and he accepted it into his private collection.
The first Bulgarian exhibition in San Clemente ever: how was it made possible and how does a Pope accept a gift?
In the past, there have been many artists trying their luck, but in vain. The Vatican simply liked Milena's works – it was as simple as this.

Why did you choose to be the patron exactly of "The Embrace of Peace"?
I am acquainted with Latin American art. This painting reminded me of Diego Rivera's mural work. Something curious: Rockefeller personally invited Rivera to draw the mural in Rockefeller Center in New York City in 1933. In Western universities, these works are very popular. Thus, my interest in the style, especially after taking a course on Frida Kahlo. The second reason is the fact I absolutely adore pastels. I have a special feeling for the texture, and, what's more, it is rare to see artists using this technique. Thirdly, or rather, I would say, foremostly, I am a person who promotes dialogue and mediation, even if we agree to disagree. All people, including Eastern and Western Christians, should be in normal human communication.

Are Catholics and East Orthodox Christians ready to unite?
Yes. We, the Eastern Orthodox, are waiting for Catholics to come back home, to the bosom of Christianity. Eastern Orthodoxy is still observing the same dogmas without alterations 2,000 years later. The beauty of our tradition is in being so adamant about not introducing any theological changes along the way. God is the same now and forever.

What is your takeaway from the occasion and the personality of His Holiness?
Pope Leo XIV won the hearts of millions from the day he presented himself as Pontifex Maximus. I am convinced he is widely regarded as a compassionate leader, demonstrating deep humility and genuine concern for the marginalised and the vulnerable. His approach to leadership blends respect for tradition with a willingness to engage with modern issues, including climate change, economic inequality, interfaith dialogue, and the ethical use of technology. I respect his academic background as well; it is very impressive: a Bachelor's in mathematics and a PhD in canon law. As a person, His Holiness is charismatic and emanates inner peace and tranquility.
