SYNERGY DESIGN: 20 YEARS OF CREATING GROUND-BREAKING INTERIORS

When you see an interior with its own integrity, visual language and spirit, it is often hard to explain what you see with words – you just feel that you have entered a space that is as close to perfection as possible. For 20 years now, Synergy Design Interior Design Studio has been on the mission to create such spaces. From grand interiors to intimate spaces, from the public to the private – regardless of the particular task, Synergy Design has crafted to perfection the art of combining creativity, care for the clients' desires and the capability to organise the whole process, from the concept design and the 3D renderings to the materialisation and the overhaul works.

This unique studio reflects the artistic mind and searching soul of its creator, Stoyan Pashov, who treats interiors as pieces of art. His approach, adopted and developed by Synergy Design's team, shines in each project branded with the studio's signature style.

We talked to Stoyan Pashov to learn more about his past, creative passions and vision for how to create a great interior.

In 2024 you are celebrating 20 years since you founded Synergy Design. Which of the many projects that you have worked on in this period will you remember forever and why?

Time indeed flies! Yes, 20 years have passed, but for my creative spirit, knowing my ideas for the future, they are just a moment in the span of time's eternity. Each design that I have created feels like a child to me. I love them all equally, but in a special way not only because I have put a part of myself in them, but also because the process of realisation of each of them have given me valuable experience on how to continue further, getting more inspired by the knowledge that at the end of the creative process I am going to see my clients' true direction. These lessons cannot be found in textbooks; they are experiences that can be obtained only personally, with 20 years of hard work.

How did interior design in Bulgaria change in this period?

You are asking about two decades of global changes in the field of design? Well, just look around – what you are going to see is an increasingly advanced technology and progressively better made materials, due to competition. I know when is the right time to use any of these. This is also thanks to my personal experience that I have gathered in these 20 years.

Did your creative style evolve too, and if yes – how?

I have evolved with each of my creations – at least this is my understanding as an author. My creative handwriting is the same – I am Synergy Design, in the creative process I put all my heart and my own, inimitable style, but I humbly follow what the clients imagine as an idea. 

I value each client – they provide me with a problem in a certain space, and I have to solve it to let them enter into the space, cut the ribbon and feel as governors of their own territory. The handwriting of my creations inevitably concludes with the same signature – Stoyan Pashov. This is an achievement that one cannot underestimate on the background of the massive change and evolution that we have seen in the field for the past 20 years.

Where do you find inspiration when you start working on a project?

Inspiration begins with the first meeting with the clients. A single word, and my imagination goes into overdrive. However, I have an initial source of inspiration. It is something that inspired me when I was just a child, and became a milestone of inspiration for me. It was seeing one of Frank Lloyd Wright architectural designs. I saw it for the first time in 1983 and, believe me, these were different times. The sight was, first and foremost, impossible to forget, and, second, was hard to access in then Bulgaria. This inspired me, even as a young child, to create by hand 3D architectural models of buildings. A couple of years later I was allowed to decorate my school with them.

Tell us more about the team of Synergy Design?

My team is special. When I choose people for it, I apply a strict selection process. I choose them for the special talents that I see in each of them, just like in the casting of musicians who are going to perform a classical piece of music. In the end, I am both the composer and the conductor, and the people in my team are special because they understand and accept working with me. 

As many professionals in the creative industries are aware, it is hard to work for a perfectionist. I value my team. They are special to me, each was specially chosen by me from this vast talent market to help me realise my ultimate goal – to achieve a higher idea in the world of interior design.
