The warmth of wood as an interior element has recently become all the craze in design, but with the solutions of Studio Nedyalkov Architects you will find that this material has even broader application. Used in construction, it provides options for flexible, nature-friendly and reliable architectural solutions, and in the interior – as a decorative and functional element, it can morph into diverse and nonorthodox shapes.

The studio's founder, architect Yasen Nedyalkov, is a highly motivated professional with experience in residential and public architecture. He has participated in all the stages of design for high-profile clients in the UK, Belgium and Bulgaria. He is a member of the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria, ARB (Architects Registration Board) and RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), and his professional education includes Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) Hons and Master of Architecture (MArch) from The University of Nottingham. He successfully passed the Architecture – RIBA Part 3 examination at London Metropolitan University.

We talked to architect Yasen Nedyalkov to learn more on how it is possible to achieve harmony between wood and modern architecture.

How and why did you decide to become an architect?

Architecture has always attracted me with its scope and meaning. We are living in a built environment that was designed by someone and that has immense influence over our lives. The opportunity to bring my input in making this environment richer and better is a privilege and pleasure that come with their own set of responsibilities.

What is good architecture for you?

Architecture is good when it is subordinated to the place and its spirit, the time and its users. These four criteria define whether the building will blend in its environment and historical context and will fulfil its functions. Being slave to styles, -isms (modernism/Classicism/parametricism etc) and ego for their own sake most often ends with buildings that do not stand up to the test of time.

The number of investors who insist on high quality of execution and the high aesthetic criteria of the buildings that they commission is on the rise. How do you answer these high requirements?

High quality can be achieved when we realise our responsibility. Designing and building proper architecture is not something that you do on your own, but the architect has the leading role in defining and guiding the process from the initial meeting with the developer to the building's handover. Understanding the process, application of good practices and protocols in design, and control over the construction process are all instrumental for the realisation of a quality project.

Wood is central in your studio's solutions. Why? What does it add to a building?

Historically, wood was one of the first materials that our ancestors used to build. Technologically, it provides immense freedom of construction while at the same time it is highly aesthetically pleasing – it creates the feeling of cosiness, warmth and connection with nature.

How is wood combined with the more high-tech elements in modern construction? How do you achieve harmony?

Currently, technologies for processing and engineering of constructive timber are having a moment, which amplifies the material's relevance. Timber is a natural material that can be processed and finished in countless ways. These qualities help us to combine the material with traditional and high-tech elements in building – both in construction and as a decorative element.

What types of wood do you prefer in your work and why?

Each type of wood has its own characteristics and, respectively, applications. In timber building structures, I mainly use local varieties – spruce, fir, oak. In interior design I have more freedom, but the final decision remains subjugated to the place and the function.

Член е на КАБ, ARB (Architects Registration Board) и RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), а професионалното му образование включва Bachelor of architecture (BArch) Hons и Master of Architecture (March) от университета в Нотингам. London Metropolitan University.
