What are the core challenges an interior designer has to deal with when designing a very small flat?

Interior design is a rather complicated and complex science that requires comprehensive knowledge in architecture, engineering and psychology. Every designer should be part psychologist to predict and feel the client, to be capable of "entering" the clients heads and understanding their ideas of the desired home, office or public space.

It is equally hard to design a very small and a very large space. Many believe that they will easily "fit" all the needed elements in a large space and that everything will work fine. It is not like that. In large spaces it is hard to find a balance that will lead to the feeling of cosiness. With small spaces, the challenges arise from the lack of room for even essential elements. In this case, the designer should "absorb" the spaces in a way that will provide the same functionality and feeling of spaciousness of a regular home.

You recently worked on such a project. How did you manage to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing, and individual interior?

Yes, recently we finished working on a really small flat of just 38 sq m. The main problem here was the lack of space for a proper kitchen because the developer had designed to put a gas boiler at the same spot. This is a rather common problem with modern construction in Bulgaria. Thanks to the full trust of our client, we managed to create a wonderful home with all the functionalities of a "normal" living space, while achieving an atmosphere of style and cosiness. Which has been our ultimate goal all the time.
