Mrs Ilieva, what is the main advantage of the English education system?

We received our authorization certificate in 2007. It has only been thirteen years, but since then we have managed to establish an entirely innovative for Bulgaria education model. The English school education is based on a completely different ideology, which the Bulgarian parent initially viewed as too extravagant. In the United Kingdom children are taught to focus on the trees to be able to see the forest.

A good example is the A Level qualification, the equivalent of Bulgarian grades 11 and 12, which includes only a third of the number of subjects covered in the Bulgarian curriculum. The outcome is incomparable depth of learning due to a large number of guided learning hours dedicated to delivering a particular course. For example, in a subject such as English Literature, students are trained to analyze only four texts per academic year unlike the method in the Bulgarian school system with its stockpile of books.

This sounds like a huge difference.

It is indeed. But as I mentioned in the beginning of our conversation, teaching is all about loving and nurturing a child, and this is what all good teachers across the globe have in common. Therefore, we adopted the English education model with its clear structure and focus on individual academic development, depending on the student’s active involvement. Children should be entrusted with responsibilities as a part of the process of gaining maturity. At our school, it is the students who choose their curriculum, their own unique combination of subjects. It is our duty to ensure their choice is tailored to meet their own needs and help them grow in the right direction.

What are the typical destinations for Darbi College graduates?

We consider the university application an integral part of the academic development of the Darbi College students. The work with every child begins at an early stage so we are able to determine the most appropriate career path, on the basis of which the university is chosen. Our consultants use professional career guidance tests to establish the most appropriate university course. Meanwhile, the student's individual curriculum is modified to meet the requirements of any university, including the top ones. We are forward-thinking – we plan at least two, sometimes even four years ahead. Every student follows their own path of development keeping in mind they are striving for their own optimal achievement. Most of our students prefer to study abroad. Among the most common destinations are Great Britain, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Germany, the USA, Russia and others. We are proud of our graduates who have been enrolled in top universities in the recent years, including the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London. What is really inspiring is that years after they graduate, our students do come back to share their pride in choosing Darbi College as a starting point. We are more than a school! We are their home!
