Anna Panyovska shares more.
You graduated archictecture at the USA and Florence, Italy. How did your foreign education shaped and enriched you as a professional and artist? How did it affect your approach towards architecture and interior design?
My international studies broadened my horizons in a truly remarkable way. It all started with my fascination with art and art history in high school, which later led to my studying architecture at Roger Williams University. There I was immersed into the world of everything buildings. My studies included the rigorous exploring of concepts and structural designs intertwined with art history.

This part of my education gave me the opportunity to learn and create projects that can be implemented in real life. The most notable ones I have worked on were building an eco village in upstate New York and the addition to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which was a real project completed by Renzo Piano in 2012. This was the backbone for my further fascination with interiors. The functional side, how to create a design that is aesthetic and feasible, as well as how it is related to the future inhabitants.
My further experience in Florence continued what I had already learned, but was focused more on the beauty of design, not so much how a building's function. Italy was a true immersion into everything interior through the many interesting expos, like Saloni del Mobile Milano, furniture design and graphic design.

These two contrasting experiences have given me the needed curiosity and practical skill set when approaching my work. They help me explore the given task in a multifaceted way. When starting a new project, I do not view the task at hand as a collection of finishes, but rather as a three-dimensional empty shell. I look for ways to implement zones, explore the structural elements, natural light patterns as well as acoustics. From there I move into adding substance to the space in the form of flooring, wall finishes, lighting, furniture, etc. This way the interior created is both unique and functional.
What is the most important step when working on the task of turning the grey walls of a construction site into a unique interior?
The most important skill for us when working on a given project is active listening and understanding the client. This is crucial, because the task at hand is never straight forward. Everybody has their own vision of what makes a home, and yet, at its core, this remains a very abstract idea. This skill is truly what transforms the bare walls into a remarkable interior. Another skill that aids in this is keeping an open mind while designing. That is why we do not work in a particular aesthetic and our projects are diverse in nature. All depends on what vision the client has for their empty space.

How do you find the balance between current trends and functionality?
The two are intertwined, so the balance is somewhat a given. In order to create an interior it has to follow the current design trends, while being functional. Also in today's world trends are fluid. By this we mean that there are many designs that are in vogue, it all depends on the project. Some projects require a more masculine design, so we work in the realm of industrial. Other times it is more soft, so we work with contemporary design elements.
What are the hot trends in Christmas decoration in 2024?
Staging or décor has always been more of a passion than the main focus of our work. Just like the interior design trends, the 2024 Christmas decorations are fluid in nature. However there is a focus on vintage and retro themes this year.

The emphasis is the classical red and green with a touch of gold or the other end of the spectrum – whites, cream, silvers. Another popular trend is handmade or homemade décor. When we create Christmas decoration, we are more winter inspired so it can last through the gloomy months and bring cheer into the home. We focus on creating a magical snowy environment, rooted in Alpine tradition. Whimsical winter villages along with neutral décor mainly focused on lighting and ambiance. This created a truly cozy and relaxing environment.
