WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU? © Anthony Georgieff

A major battle between the Russian Imperial Army, backed up by Bulgarian volunteers, and Ottoman forces was fought around that mountain peak in August 1877, predetermining the end of the war as a result of which Bulgaria gained its independence.

Since the 1930s a huge monument of stone has stood there to remind the generations of the valour of the 19th century freedom fighters. It is one of Bulgaria's most heavily charged historical sites, and prime ministers and presidents, including Putin, have been brought over on state visits.

Hint: The Bulgarian name of the peak translates as "Dog Rose."

And the winner is…

Dobroslava SimeonovaDobroslava Simeonova is the reader who guessed correctly that in the issue 128 Where in Bulgaria Are You? quiz at Vagabond we showed you the Magurata Cave. Dobroslava works at the Oslo Airport for a ground handling company. She has been reading Vagabond since the magazine's beginnings, because it "is the only English language magazine (I am aware of) that gives objective view of the issues in the country. The interviews are very interesting." To a foreign visitor of Bulgaria, Dobroslava would recommend the abandoned monument of the Bulgarian Communist Party at mount Buzludzha, the Museum of Socialist Art in Sofia, and... the lake at Druzhba neighbourhood in Sofia, "a nice park in a residential area." Dobroslava wins a copy of Hidden Treasures of Bulgaria, Part II.
