WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU? © Anthony Georgieff

There are no Jews in this city situated on a major river in Bulgaria, but their synagogue still stands – in a state of abandonment and severe dilapidation.

Built in 1905 and modelled on a famous synagogue in Vienna, it used to be the centre of Jewish spiritual life before the war and the subsequent mass emigration of Jews in the late 1940s. In fact, it is but one of Bulgaria's 13 still standing synagogues of which only two are functioning as such. The rest have been converted into art galleries and business centres – or just stand in ruins, sordid reminders of what used to be a vibrant community.
