WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU? © Anthony Georgieff

Bulgaria does not have many forts and castles – at least not in comparison to Scotland or Romania – and there are good historical reasons for that. Still, it does have a few, charming reminders of the Middle Ages and before that locals and visitors alike take in with awe and inspiration based on the mysteries of the distant past.

In the next issue of Vagabond we will be bringing you an overview of most remaining forts and castles in what is now Bulgaria (and you'd better hurry to see them before the local authorities have creatively rebuilt them).

The one pictured here, for example, is on the right bank of the Danube River. Built over by Romans, Bulgarians and Ottomans it still greets the river traffic from its strategic position, evoking tales of the warriors and itinerant merchants who lived around it centuries ago.
