Unlike almost everything else on the coast that has centuries and in some cases millennia of history, this is originally a 19th Century settlement that rapidly expanded in the first decades of its existence to incorporate a wide variety of ethnic minorities arriving to avoid Balkan war, poverty and ethnic cleansing, and build a little Brooklyn where the chief purpose was to make money rather than chase the ghosts of the past.
Little remains of the town's original urban culture, however. At present, it is a major commercial and transport hub, with a big airport with direct flights to London and elsewhere. It is the gateway to larger and smaller resort areas on the Black Sea coast that see hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.

Who Wins a Weekend for Two?
Liliya Petrova, from Sofia, guessed correctly that the answer to the quiz Where in Bulgaria are you?, in Vagabond No.79, was Kalofer.
Liliya is a designer and recommends to any foreigner visiting Bulgaria, to try the local cuisine, to visit some of its numerous culture sites, the Black Sea and the mountains, and to learn more about its rich history. Liliya reads Vagabond because it is "an unbiased source of information with interesting topics on business and leisure. I always check the magazine when I need more information about the latest developments of Bulgarian health care, education, tourism and night life. A useful and favourite publication!" Liliya wins a weekend for two at Balkan Jewel Resort, Bansko.
