WE'VE GOT MAIL

I thought I might share my views on something I think is very indicative of Bulgaria. It's about the stray cats and dogs. Yeah, I know, but I'm not going to lecture you about it. It's just a few thoughts.

WE'VE GOT MAIL

Vagabond chose the 10 nominations for the symbol of Bulgaria contest in a poorly organised brainstorming session, which took place with copious amounts of homemade rakiya, a cloud of cigarette smoke and in the company of several mutri and scantily clad chalga-loving girls.

WE'VE GOT MAIL

In July we sent our son out on a school trip to Sunny Beach in spite of warnings from friends who'd been there that it's overdeveloped, overpopulated and overpriced. He came back a week later - and said he actually enjoyed the beach and the discos.

WE'VE GOT MAIL

I have lived in Bulgaria for four years now and like most of my friends here, when a magazine is mentioned, we shrug our shoulders as those are filled with real estate propaganda, watered-down information and, to be rather blunt, are just plain boring.

WE'VE GOT MAIL

Great topics, excellent layout and high-class pictures/illustrations. I was amazed about the amount of inside information (that you can only get in Bulgarian which I don't speak yet) and the fact that Vagabond is a very interactive magazine with a lot of contests and forums, directed to both Bulgarians and foreigners.

QUOTE-UNQUOTE

"Little is said about the fact that 70 to 80 percent of our MPs are faceless people. The ordinary citizen can recognise only a few of those elected to parliament. We have heard the names of 20 or so more, but we can hardly link their names to a face."

Svetoslav Spasov, independent MP, in an interview for the Monitor daily

QUOTE-UNQUOTE

"There is no other case in Bulgaria's history when a man in uniform has dumped his epaulettes in such a way. This implies no sense of patriotism at all. If you don't want to serve in the police, you should take your hat and leave."

President Georgi Parvanov

QUOTE-UNQUOTE

"Yes, on the very eve of this visit to Moscow there were appeals, rather insistent appeals, for me to ‘catch a diplomatic cold,' and lower the level sharply and manifestly. Jokingly, I asked whether we should not apply this approach to those countries where the financial and economic crisis began and thus punish them, figuratively speaking."

President Georgi Parvanov
