How aesthetic gynaecology can make us healthier, happier and more satisfied
Dr Borislava Popova has been a gynaecologist for 18 years and in this period of professional development and growth she has faced a number of challenging cases, including in cancer treatment. But when a few years ago she learned about aesthetic gynaecology, she had a revelation. A whole new field of gynaecology was in the making, one that combines top-end technology and the need of in-dept knowledge and understanding of the female body to achieve impressive results in treatment of health and psychological conditions that affect the lives of millions of women worldwide.
Intrigued, Dr Popova embarked on the mission to become one of the best in this new field. After a number of specialised trainings in Dubai, Spain, Switzerland, the USA and others, she opened a dedicated office in Sofia where knowledge and advanced technologies are used for the benefit of patients of all ages. Today, Dr Popova is one of the few specialists in aesthetic gynaecology in Bulgaria who offer complete care in the field. Her achievements were recognised by the American Intimate Wellness Institute which made her office a Center of Excellence, the only one in Europe so far.
What is aesthetic gynaecology?
This is a rather new sub specialty of gynaecology that is becoming increasingly popular in the USA, the UK, the Middle East, South America, and Poland. Some colleagues believe that to become an aesthetic gynaecologist one needs only to undergo a training on how to operate the high-technology equipment we use in treatment. The truth is that this is far from enough. A well-trained specialist needs an in-dept knowledge of the organism to understand what problem can be solved with which type of equipment.
For whom is aesthetic gynaecology?
According to the general notion, aesthetic gynaecology is mainly about improving the appearance of genitalia. In fact, the field transcends cosmetic procedures such as laser bleaching. The benefits of aesthetic gynaecology are bigger and are for women of all ages, and especially ones aged 35-65.
The idea of aesthetic gynaecology is to use non-surgical methods to treat functional problems. Such problem can be stress incontinence, when a woman pees a little when performing everyday tasks or during sport. Stress incontinence is by no means a threatening health condition, and yet it is a cause for concern, discomfort, and even shame. Thousands of women suffer from it, particularly ones who have given birth. About 80% of women over 36 has reported at least one or two incidents of stress incontinence. It is something natural, a result of the inevitable change of hormones and tissues with ageing.
Other health problems that aesthetic gynaecology can help with affect menopausal women. Reduced oestrogen levels cause the vagina to loose some of its natural lubrication, resulting in women feeling pain and discomfort during sexual contact. Hormonal treatment can be applied, but aesthetic gynaecology has alternative methods for solving the problem, restoring the normal vaginal function and of pleasure of sex.
Another group of menopausal patients suffer from vulva and vaginal atrophy that can trigger carcinoma development. We can also help such women.
As a whole, aesthetic gynaecology aims to help women to solve non-life-threatening conditions which affect their normal way of life.
What technologies do you use?
One of our latest additions is the special chair for pelvic muscles stimulation. The patient sits on it, fully dressed. For 30 minutes the chair sends high-intensity electromagnetic waves to her pelvic floor, forcing the pelvic muscles to contract. These muscles are crucial for the general health, as they help keeping the internal organs in place. With the age and consecutive births, these muscles loose their strength and elasticity. The problem affects particularly women who have given birth 3, 4 or more times, as the vagina's opening remains enlarged, thus allowing more frequent infections.
Unfortunately, you cannot exercise your pelvic muscles at the gym. The chair helps to solve this. A 30-minute session on it is the equivalent of 11,000 level exercises. This is why I recommend pelvic muscles stimulation therapy to all women after they have given birth. It will restore their pelvic floor and will even improve it. Another benefit is the improvement of sexual life and enhancement of sexual pleasure.
In what other areas can aesthetic gynaecology help?
Aesthetic gynaecology has two main fields of interest. One is patients with functional problems, like stress incontinence. The second concerns patients with aesthetic problems and insignificant loss of functionality. These are mainly young women who seek procedures such as outer labia enlargement and genital bleaching. These problems do not affect their health, but they have severe effect on their confidence and psychological health. Another emotionally-connected problem is caused by inability to reach orgasm. We treat this with enlargement of the G-spot. It makes sexual activity more pleasurable for the woman, as it should be.
What are your most popular procedures?
By all means these are vaginal lifting, stress incontinence treatment and G-spot enlargement. Cosmetic procedures such as fillers and bleaching are not as well-known and popular, but this is bound to change.
The very essence of genital problems means that affected people are ashamed to talk about them even with close friends, and think of completely normal conditions as abnormal and shameful. I hope this notion will change. Conditions that affect the normal lifestyle of thousands of women are treatable. This is our mission, as pioneers of aesthetic gynaecology: to help women enjoy their normal lives for longer.
