AVIS MEDICA REHABILITATION HOSPITAL: BACK TO MOTION WITH ROBOTIC HELP
The hospital uses top-class technology to restore the motion of upper and lower limbs
Located among a pleasant park, the beautifully restored building of the old school of Tuchenitsa village, near Pleven, looks like some charming hotel for connoisseurs of quiet relaxation. But inside it something more important takes place. It is the home of Bulgaria's second centre for robotic neurorehabilitation, where the professionals at the Pleven-based Avis Medica Rehabilitation Hospital help children and adults to feel the joy of movement.
Avis Medica applies the principle of neuroplasticity to help people who have partially lost their ability to move after a stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spinal or head injury, or another neurological or orthopedic disorder. Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to reorganise itself after an injury. With time, undamaged neighbouring brain zones or spinal nerves begin to perform the lost functions. As a result, the patient's abilities to move are improved.
The professionals at Avis Medica achieve this with intensive, demanding and diverse therapy. Robotic neurorehabilitation plays a major role in it.
The high-tech Lokomat Pro is used to retrain the brain to move the limbs again and uses movement to overcome their spasticity. Amadeo, an innovative robotic device, restores hands and fingers' motion and even fine motor skills, while Myro, a sensory device for upper limbs rehabilitation, stimulates perception and memory. The robotic gait therapy Omego helps patients with lower limbs problems while the mobile device Andango exercises gait by bridging the gap between treadmill walking exercises and unassisted walking. Armeo Spring is a hand exoskeleton that uses training in a virtual environment to restore the motion of the affected limb. Tymo is a rehabilitation device for static and dynamic evaluation and therapy for improvement of balance and control of body posture, active use of power and upper and lower limb motion. The Pablo system is used for therapy of neurological and orthopedic damages of the upper and lower limbs in children and adults.
