Established in March 1989, SOFITA is the first private translation agency in Bulgaria and the first one certified under the European Translation Standard EN 15038 (now ISO 17100). In 1991 SOFITA, jointly with APIS, created and is still updating its legal database product, APIS-SOFITA BG LAW, covering all primary Bulgarian legislation translated into English. SOFITA provides interpreting, translation and localisation services and is a Bulgarian translation service provider to many EU institutions. The company is an initiator and founder of the Bulgarian Association of Professional Interpreting and Translation Agencies (BAPPA) and an active member of the European Language Industry Association (ELIA) and the Globalization & Localization Association (GALA).
We talk with Ramona Stoyanova, CEO, about SOFITA's milestones achieved through the years.
How would you sum up your 30 years as a translation service pioneer?
We are happy we made it and proud with what we achieved. We know, however, that this difficult mission would be impossible without our dynamic team of people who share our goals, managers and assistants skilfully organising, training and coordinating some 1,000 partners – translators and editors dedicated to this challenging and important business. We launched a start-up in 1989, lived our dreams with it, filled it with this unique spirit that is now the tradition that is one of SOFITA's greatest assets. An asset tried and tested over the years with unity, devotion and operational efficiency, but mostly with this unquenchable thirst for growth and success. All these long and difficult years, SOFITA managed to keep its clients happy and win new ones with hard work, uncompromising integrity, professionalism, responsibility and dedication, defending its motto "Perfection is unattainable, but striving for perfection makes the world a better place. Let's do it together!"
Which was SOFITA’s first government client?
The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs chose us to provide all translation services during the Meeting for Protection of the Environment (ECOFORUM) between 16 October and 3 November 1989. Delegations from 35 European countries, the USA and Canada attended the meeting.
In how many countries does SOFITA have partners today?
We have 156 clients and 60 vendors in 216 countries – Bulgarian, European and international institutions and companies. Canada is the most distant country where we have a partner.
In what fields do you specialise?
SOFITA offers translation in all fields, but our highest levels of specialisation are in law, banking and finance, IT, life sciences, automotive industry, marketing and advertising, technology, manufacturing.
