There is hardly a shortage of good causes to support in Bulgaria and abroad nowadays, but the Adopt a Bird campaign stands out from the crowd. It is a rare and creative opportunity for individuals, companies and organisations to support Bulgaria's archaeological heritage and make a long-term difference in this country's cultural life.

The birds in question are not alive, but made of mosaics and are… 1,500 years old. They are from all flocks and feathers and come in the dozens, covering the floor of Bulgaria's largest and most spectacular late-Antiquity church, the Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis, in today's Plovdiv.

The basilica and its gorgeous mosaics are being brought back to life in one of the largest restoration projects in Bulgaria in decades, with support from the America for Bulgaria Foundation, Plovdiv Municipality, the Ministry of Culture, and hundreds of volunteers. In 2019, a modern cultural complex housing the mosaics will open to the public.
This September, citizens and entrepreneurs from Plovdiv established the Friends of the Basilica Foundation, which aims to turn the location into a lively cultural centre for children and adults, locals, Bulgarians and foreign visitors. To fund this, the Friends of the Basilica are launching the Adopt a Bird campaign.
