Architect Vela Nikolova elaborates.
Do you have a particular style and how would you define it?
Yes, I can say that our work is recognisable without sticking to a particular architectural trend. Our style has taken shape throughout the years and is a reflection of the people we meet and we work with. We try to be contemporary, in line with the trends and to be innovative where this is possible, but without getting surreal. We prefer clean spaces and shapes; neat, but well made details. This is what probably unites all of our projects.
What is the driving force for you when you start working on a new project?
Inspiration. A project, first, should inspire you. Then you should identify the best inspiration for the particular task. Regardless of our year-long experience, we begin each new project with surveying similar solutions and the novelties in architecture and art relevant to the project. Inspiration should fit the client's needs and expectations. We create architecture for people. Team work is important, because everyone in it brings in different ideas that provoke the imagination. We think that when we work together, the best solutions are born.
How do you achieve the balance between objective factors, the client's desires and your creative vision?
With practice. With time one realises that the best projects are when you have met the client's expectations, while adding something from yourself that the client is unable to realise or define as an actual need. To achieve this balance, personal contact is key. Regardless of whether we work on a family house, a residential complex, a store or an office, we always create the project for a particular person on the other side: be it a real or an imaginary one. A project is a combination of thousands of conditions. One of its important aspects is to protect the client of mistakes that would harm the everyday comfort – that is why we take care to be as candid as possible throughout the whole process. However, it is important for us to be on the client's wavelength, so that our personal preferences don't get the upper hand. We are the people who have to find the path towards your personal harmony.
Is there something we should be aware of before contacting a professional architect?
You are not required to have a clear concept of what you want. Our job is together with you to find a solution. We are the ones who will help you to realise your dreams.
Do you have projects that are special to you?
Every project is special to me, regardless of whether it is an interior of a private home or a public building. I remember each of my projects, because of the personal contact, which is hard to forget. Some projects are easy, others are more difficult, and yet third are a true challenge. All of them, however, stay in the heart.
