Sofia, as the capital's motto says, is the city that keeps growing, but never gets old. Or boring, we can add. Sometimes Sofia is covered in mist and sometimes it bathes in sunlight. Sometimes it is quiet and dreamy, and sometimes it is loud and jolly. In all shapes and seasons though, Vitosha Boulevard is Sofia's brightest and most colourful accessory.
The mighty St. Nedelya Church and the square by the same name mark the beginning of the pedestrian part of Vitosha Boulevard, which Sofianites prefer to call Vitoshka. When you stand in the beginning and look towards the end of the street, you will see the rounded blue peaks of Vitosha, the mountain which gave the name of this boulevard.
It is easy to feel the pulse of Vitoshka: just immerse yourself into the bubbling life, the laughs and the colours of the numerous cafés, bars and restaurants which fill the pedestrian part of the boulevard and the surrounding streets. Enjoy the aromas of fresh coffee and vanilla ice-cream, the music of street performers playing the guitar or the saxophone, and the bright lights of the shops' windows. Because that's what Vitoshka stands for – a multi-coloured urban vortex for all the senses, full of many diverse experiences.
Vitoshka, however, is not only hustle and bustle. A net of quiet streets spreads around the boulevard, filled with cosy neighbourhood stores, small family bookshops and houses and apartments which are as good for living as they are charming with their urban spirit and central location.
Vitoshka and the area are not only for fun - they can easily be called "my neighbourhood". The area provides plenty of establishments and administrative buildings, making life easier, and boasts one of the best schools in Sofia, 22nd Georgi Stoykov Rakovski High school. Located on 134 Vitosha Blvd, it has been around for 110 years and has the reputation of a place offering top quality education.
A few minutes away from the pedestrian part of Vitoshka, on the quiet street of Sveti Petar, is an all-day kindergarten. The nearby parks, with recently renovated playgrounds, provide possibilities for family fun during weekends.
If you have already decided to settle in Sofia's centre, Vitoshka awaits you with a big smile and the promise that here you will find both the dynamics of a busy capital and the peace, associated with the feeling of being at home.
