The development of this technology has been a question without an answer for ophthalmologists worldwide for years, and the breakthrough was done by LUMINA, a year-long research project of the Dutch company AkkoLens and the RESBIOMED-VISSUM Sofia Eye Clinic, the first clinic outside Spain from the VISSUM Ophthalmology Corporation. This project is one of the finest examples of multinational cooperation in the private sector for ophthalmology innovations within the EU.
The successful completion of the project was celebrated with a ceremony on 29 November 2013, hosted by the medical directors of the project, Dr Aleksandar Angelov and Prof. Jorge Alliot, along with Dr Venelina Mileva, Dr Michael Rombach and Dr Aleksey Simonov. The participating patients received honorable plaques by the Bulgarian football star Hristo Stoichkov. The Commerce and Economic Advisor to the Embassy of Spain in Bulgaria, Maria Perez Moro, and the Attaché for Economic Affairs to the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bulgaria, Yanette Fereiser, also attended.
