It doesn't take much to prepare a healthy menu, even if you are a child. Five hundred children from Sofia schools came together to see for themselves in the Arena Armeets hall on 24 January, the European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking, and joined chefs in making healthy sandwiches.

The event was organised by the European Association of Chefs EuroToques and the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria. The Bulgarian Minister for Agriculture demonstrated his sandwich-making skills along with TV culinary hosts. As child obesity shapes up as a common problem across the European Union, the initiative helped teach children about balanced and varied diet as an alternative to snacks and fast food. This was the fifth year in a row when the European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking was marked in Bulgaria where, according to 2011 statistics, over 30 percent of children are overweight or obese.
